Poetry In Persuasion

Be Persuasive

Cialdini and Martin in “Science of Persuasion” dish the ins and outs of how people can be influenced; moreover, there is poetry in employing an emotional strategy, a driving factor in this process. For the basis of my work in this and other posts, writers, authors, and publishers will be my central focus; however, for this post, I will use poets for my example.

Give and Take

I find the techniques one must employ to be poetic because it all revolves around the mutual trust that the consumer and producer rely on in order to meet and fulfill each other's needs. The relationship is built on a few shortcuts mentioned in “Science of Persuasion.” Authority and Reciprocity are two of the more impactful focuses you should consider as you come to understand how your target audience will consume, interact, and purchase your media. It encompasses the other shortcuts Cialdini and Martin provide, although I believe they are intertwined and show through those two avenues alone.

Authority

In media, seeming credible can appear harder because of the subjective nature of your work. However, for a poet who is looking to spread their portfolio consider listing awards won, schooling and workshops taken, or other experiences you have that provide background on your work and establish how you can influence the audience’s feelings, which is the ultimate goal in sharing media going hand in hand with reciprocity, as connections form, the audience is compelled to share your media and support this emotional connection established.
